    ###Story
    Das Spiel folgt Mario auf seiner Suche nach der Rettung von Prinzessin Peach aus ihrer Zwangsheirat mit Bowser. Das Spiel beginnt mit einem Kampf zwischen Mario und Bowser in dessen Flugzeug. Bowser stößt Mario vom Schiff und zerfetzt seine Mütze in Stücke. Mario erwacht im Kappenkönigreich, das von hutähnlichen Geistern bewohnt wird, und freundet sich mit einem von ihnen namens Cappy an. Es stellt sich heraus, dass Bowser auch Cappys Schwester Tiara entführt hat, und nun müssen die Helden Bowser durch mehrere Königreiche jagen, um Peach und Tiara zu retten.

    ###Gameplay
    Das Gameplay von Super Mario Odyssey ist von Super Mario 64 und Super Mario Sunshine inspiriert. Das Spiel besteht aus 17 Levels (die als "Königreiche" bezeichnet werden). In den meisten von ihnen ist es Ihr Ziel, eine bestimmte Anzahl von Power-Monden zu sammeln. Wenn der Spieler genug von ihnen gesammelt hat, kann er zum nächsten Königreich weitergehen. Einige Monde können in verschiedenen Teilen des Levels gefunden oder als Belohnung für das Erfüllen bestimmter Aufgaben oder Herausforderungen erworben werden. Marios Moveset ähnelt größtenteils dem von Super Mario 64 und umfasst Wandsprünge, Dreifachsprünge, Purzelbäume, weite Sprünge und Rollen auf dem Boden.
